Is the end in sight for the E&C?

The Elephant and castle shopping centre stands tall in the middle of Southwark, or at least it does for now. Having had better days and now falling into disrepair controversial plans to demolish the centre all together have been met with fierce resistance from residents.

These plans are nothing new and have never been popular, however when Delancey the company behind the redevelopment, recently unveiled plans to the public they didn’t go down well. Steep increases in rent are simply unrealistic for the many independent businesses that currently call the centre home.

Hosting a bingo hall, bowling alley and a diverse range of shops those opposed to the plans fear losing a community Jan Yatak a local resident told us “it has everything in one place, under one roof, people meet in it socially and is rich in diversity which can not be replaced”. while Saif from Games & Gadgets focused his concern on local youth saying“the shop has been here for 13 years the kids have grown up with it they love the shop it’s like a second home “

Southwark council declined to comment but have previously stated “it is very important that whatever happens on the shopping centre site is a positive improvement for residents of all ages “
