First time ever study could prevent babies developing eczema

It was announced on 24/10, that Researchers at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Foundation NHS Trust will be leading a first time ever study to investigate if water softeners can prevent eczema in babies.


The study of softened water for eczema prevention (SOFTER) will trial installing water softeners in the homes of babies at a high risk of eczema.


SOFTER will build upon research that found eczema may be caused by hard water damaging, the skin’s protective layer.

The trial is being funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Guy’s and St Thomas’ and Kingston Hospital. 

The water softeners will be provided by Harvey Water Softeners.
