When I planned my semester in Europe, the first trip I planned was to visit Athens to meet my friend Emma. Athens absolutely exceeded all of my expectations.
I didn’t know it at the time that I booked the trip but it was absolutely excellent to leave 30° London to enter 70° Athens as November came to a close. It was sunny every day and could not have been more perfect for walking around.
We ate chicken souvlaki for pretty much every meal and wandered through the streets of Athens. Our visits included the Acropolis and the Temple of Zeus which were incredible sites. We hiked up to the Acropolis and saw the Parthenon as well as the view of the entire city of Athens, the surrounding mountains, and the sea on the skyline.
Since we were in Athens on Black Friday, we spent the day walking around the shops. I found that out of all the places I have been this semester, Greece was the most challenging to navigate with no knowledge of the language. Even though I was okay without it, I would recommend looking up key phrases in Greek before visiting.
We stayed in an Airbnb that was a flat on the top floor of a building with roof access. Since the weather was so nice, we brought our drinks and blankets up to the roof. We watched Greek mythology-themed movies while gazing at the Acropolis on the Athenian skyline.
While in Greece for the weekend, we took a day trip to Cape Sounoin to visit the Temple of Poseidon.
