While visiting Athens, we decided to take a day trip to Cape Sounion.
This part of Greece is most known for its Temple of Poseidon which stands proudly at the top of a hill and dominates the entire skyline. Cape Sounion is also an incredible little town full of nature and exploration opportunities.
Getting to Cape Sounion is quite easy from Athens. We took a bus from the center of Athens that went directly to the hillside where the Temple of Poseidon is found. The journey there was incredible as the city melted away into the countryside. We drove alongside the coast and saw the islands closest to the shore.
When we arrived, we ate lunch at the restaurant on the hillside. Then we visited the the Temple of Poseidon which is next to the archaeological site of Sounion. We also climbed a nearby hill where the ruins of the Temple of Athena lay.
In addition to the Temple, another attraction that Cape Sounion offers to visitors is the beach. Since we had to get back to Athens for the evening we did not pursue this opportunity. However, if the weather had been warmer, it would have been excellent to make time to go to the beach there.
