Extinction Rebellion protest creates a standstill for London

An environmental society decided to take over the streets of London with the national campaign ‘Extinction Rebellion’

Extinction Rebellion is a campaign which was founded in 2018  and it is led by  environmentalists that are passionate about changing the climate for the better.

This campaign made parts of London come to a standstill especially the Westminster area whereby multiple businesses were affected.

Around 217 protesters were arrested in the first day due to criminal damage and obstruction yet despite this happening people were still determined to raise as much awareness as possible.

Ricky who owns a nearby tourist shop said, “there has been at least a 50% loss in business in one day because of this protest”

“I got made aware of this protest a couple of days before it started yet I didn’t know about the impact it would have on travel and how big it was actually be”

Hundreds  of people would camp overnight to prove a point as they weren’t going to move until they have made an impact on peoples opinion and got their voices heard.

When speaking to one of the participants she said, “Anyone can join in as it’s an inclusive accessible thing where people can speak their own mind”.

“Throughout the years there has been a lot of pressure on individuals to make the right decision about climate change”.

The main purpose of Extinction Rebellion is to raise awareness of the amount of climate change happening around the world and to reduce carbon emissions to almost zero by 2025.
