Blaze of Stewartby Brickworks

On Sunday night around 9:45pm a fire erupted inside the historically abandoned brickworks factory of Stewartby. Firefighters from Bedford tackled the blaze and recommended residents around the village to stay safe inside their homes and keep doors and windows shut to avoid the increasing amount of smoke in the area on Sunday night. The Stewartby Brickworks has prevailed since the 1920s, later merging to form the London brick company in 1923. Fortunately, the fire was kept under control and there were no casualties or injured members of the community present. The Bedfordshire Fire and rescue team told the ‘Bedfordshire independant’ that the fire had been completely put out but they’d remain on the scene to ‘damp down’. “Another bit of Stewartby history gone. The old brickworks canteen burnt to the ground” – Trevor Braybrooks, local resident of Stewartby There is currently very little information regarding the root cause of the fire. Residents of the village have expressed this incident as a ‘disturbing upset’ to the community. Thanks to the management of the Bedfordshire fire department, the monument still stands to see another day. This is breaking news and further investigation is yet to occur.
