With planning permission approved in 2011 to build the construct, the Covanta Rookery South Energy Recovery is set to be completed by May 2022 with the goal of powering potentially 112,500 homes by turning waste into energy.

The 7 year battle to halt construction of the 43 metre waste incinerator has come to an almighty conclusion as the government give a full go ahead to continue building on the site located at the edge of the Millennium Country Park/Forest Centre – a popular local family venue currently attracting thousands of visitors a year in the heart of the Forest of Marston Vale.

“We are pleased to have reached this key milestone on the Rookery project, which is a major component of our UK development plan and the second of four initial projects to move forward with GIG,” said Covanta CEO Stephen J. Jones.

Campaign team Bedfordshire Against Covanta Incinerator (BACI) have made their voices heard in the media in their fight to spread awareness against the potential harm that the Incinerator will most likely deal to the surrounding wildlife.

Stewartby Lake is part of the surrounding Country Park which attracts thousands of people for water sport and forestry activities. Residents of Stewartby village openly express disdain for the inevitable environmental changes this will cause.

CO2 Emissions from the plant will cause unprecedented harm to our local environment. – said Stewartby Parish council member James Finchley
