Matchweek 5 has come and gone, and with it, supporters from far and wide witnessed a magical midweek of football. For some, match week 5 determined who would and would not progress to the next round of the Champions League, providing a matched sense of anguish and excitement as ambitions begin to flare as the season heats up.  For Liverpool and its fans, the moratorium continues. Liverpool faced Napoli at Anfield and to some surprise, were only able to escape their home turf with a point. This result leaves both Liverpool and Napoli dependent on match week 6 to qualify for the next stage of the Champions League.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw as Napoli frontman Dries Mertens was able to snatch an early goal to put the Naples outfit up 1-0 with a favorable advantage to end the first half. Derived of clean chances, Jurgen Klopp’s frustration shone through, earning him a yellow card for his troubles. Surprisingly Liverpool’s front three of Salah, Mane, and Firmino didn’t seem to show up for this match. However, to the great surprise and jubilation of Liverpool fans, the often sidelined center half Dejan Lovren was able to snatch the equalizer with a towering header.

Post Match

The match would go on the end in a stalemate, but there is perhaps a more significant concern than still needing to qualify for the next round. Center midfielder Fabinho picked up a hard knock that saw him leave the match earlier. Going forward from here is unclear, and Jurgen Klopp was quoted in a post-match interview saying he has “hope” that the injury will be easily treatable. However, he was reluctant to say anything with confidence. Klopp even added that Fabinho is “hard” (tough), and any injury that would force him off the pitch may be severe. Fans patiently await Liverpool’s upcoming fixtures and anxiously look forward to how Klopp proceeds through a thick scheduled with growing injuries.
