Taking place at Holdrons Arcade, First Thursdays is a late night event that takes place on the first Thursday of every month from 7-9pm. I decided to head down to their second event on November 1st and what a night it was. Organised by a collective of shop owners along with the owner of the building, the main purpose of the event is to promote the arcade and the individual businesses.
I asked local resident Craig Pembrook what the event means to him. He responded “I’ve lived here for 3 years and I’ve scarcely had the opportunity to come inside the building. The First Thursdays event is such an incredible idea, people like me who have to work during the day are able to come down and be involved with the community. It’s amazing.”
As the night went on, I stumbled across Wavey Garms, an urban clothing shop also situated in Holdrons Arcade. Run by siblings Andreas and Rhiannon, the shop extends their closing time by 2 hours on First Thursdays to welcome in the extra trade. Rhiannon says “The longer opening hours not only bring more customers but also encourages people that wouldn’t normally come into the store – to come and check it out.”
I think more shopping centres should replicate the idea as not everyone is able to make it during weekday opening hours which sucks. Some people (like me) may also prefer to do their shopping in person rather than online.
A night full of music, food and shopping – if you ever find yourself in Peckham Rye on the First Thursday of the month, head down to Holdrons Arcade.
